International coal supplier, HMS Bergbau is taking another step towards mining in Silesia, Poland, with the drilling of two exploration wells by its wholly-owned subsidiary, Silesian Coal.

Drilling for coal in the Orzesze region of Silesia

Drilling started at the end of June and is taking place in the Orzesze licence area. Both holes will have a depth of 1000 m. On the basis of this drilling and historical drilling results, the company will apply for a mining license in the Orzesze region. HMS Bergbau also holds exploration licenses for the Studzionka-Mizerów region.

HMS Bergbau acquired Silesia Coal in January 2014.

According to the company, the two areas contain over 1 billion t of geological coal resources. It expects to receive mining licences in eight to twelve months’ time – subject to the approval of the approving authorities.

Building on a long history of Silesian coal mining

“Given the fact that high quality coking coal has been mined here for decades, we are confident that we will find reserves throughout the area. Accordingly, we are optimistic with regard to the results of two exploration wells”, commented Dr.Markowski, president of Silesian Coal.

“By accessing the resources, we will strengthen our market position in Europe and will be able to act independently from other procurement channels. From today's perspective, the exploration in the Silesian areas will have a lasting positive impact on the revenues and earnings of the company”, commented Heinz Schernikau, CEO of HMS Bergbau AG.
