The Port of Newcastle, which is the largest port on the east coast of Australia and the greatest coal export port, has appointed Craig Carmody as its incoming CEO.

Having led the strategic direction of Svitzer Australia, Carmody has a thorough understanding of the Australian transport and maritime industry.

Before joining Svitzer, he worked as a senior government adviser in transport and infrastructure, including in the Offices of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure.

The Chair of the Port of Newcastle, Professor Roy Green, said: "Craig's commercial and political experience, combined with his industry knowledge and strategic skills, make him an ideal leader for the further development and diversification of the Port of Newcastle and continuing transformation of the Hunter region economy".

Carmody commented: "I am delighted to join the world's largest coal export port. I look forward to leading the organisation and working with the team at the Port of Newcastle and all its stakeholders to progress the Port's diversification agenda, including the development of a container terminal, to ensure regional growth and an efficient freight and logistics network for NSW."

Carmody is to take over from Geoff Crowe, who has led the organisation for 3 years.

Professor Green added: "I am absolutely confident that Craig will build on the achievements and leadership of Geoff Crowe to drive the next phase of the Port's growth and diversification strategy, maintaining our excellent safety record and strengthening our relationships with industry and community".

According to the Port, Carmody will commence his role on 1 August 2018.
