Potential for UCG to be studied in Russia

Linc Energy and LLC YakutMinerals, an affiliate of Ervington Investments Limited, have partnered to develop underground coal gasification (UCG) to gas-to-liquids (GTL) in the Chukotka region of northeast Russia.

YakutMinerals has now commissioned Linc Energy to undertake an initial resource screening and opportunity assessment study for the proposed project, said a company press release. The work will commence immediately and be funded by YakutMinerals.

Plenty of coal; a need for gas

Linc Energy’s CEO, Peter Bond, said that his company’s technology was a perfect fit for the opportunity in Chukotka: “This region has significant stranded coal resources with a demand for natural gas and liquid fuels, which at present is met from regional imports,” Bond said.

“This agreement is particularly exciting as it puts together the building blocks of UCG, as a gas production source, with GTL, as the consumer of that UCG gas, and the subsequent production of cost-effective ultra-clean fuel as the saleable product.”

If a suitable resource is located as part of the study, the two companies would develop further terms to bring a project to fruition.

Linc Energy: a UCG leader

Linc Energy has constructed and commissioned the world’s only UCG-to-GTL demonstration facility in Chinchilla, Australia. It also owns and operates the world’s only commercial UCG operation in Uzbekistan, which supplies syngas to a nearby power plant.
