Traders await first gas shipments from Curtis Island project

Energy traders are keenly anticipating the first shipment of gas from BG Group’s flagship gas project at Curtis Island in Queensland.

The QCLNG project will take gas piped from coal seams and convert it into LNG before export overseas.

First shipment of the gas is expected by the end of the month.

“There’s a bit of interest in it because of the quality,” one trader said. “No one has ever marketed coalbed methane LNG in the spot market so it will be interesting to see where the cargoes go.”

QCLNG is the world’s first project to turn coalbed methane (CBM) into LNG.

Two other similar projects are also close to completion. These include Santos’ GLNG project at Gladstone and Origin Energy’s Australia Pacific LNG project.

BG recently announced plans to sell its QCLNG Pipeline subsidiary for US$5 billion, as part of a turnaround plan after a string of production downgrades.
