Wearable technology for the mining industry

World Coal,

Motion Metrics has announced it has hired Vandrico Solutions Inc., a Vancouver-based wearable technology development company, to co-develop wearable device applications for mining operations. The company believes wearable technology presents an opportunity to improve safety, connectivity, and productivity in ways never before possible for the mining industry.

Wearable technology has emerged as a new trend in consumer electronics and is expected to reach 10 million units of sales in 2014. Wearable devices enable delivery of real-time notifications that immediately capture the users’ attention, wherever they are. This allows each user to interact with the device in an intuitive and hands-free manner.

Motion Metrics believes wearable technology has the potential to fill an important void in mining applications. “Based on requests from some of our larger customer mines, we identified Vandrico Solutions as a perfect solution provider to co-develop the wearable technology complement for our current line of products. We are very excited to offer wearable solutions to the mining workplace in the near future.” said Shahram Tafazoli, president and CEO of Motion Metrics.

The first objective of this project is to integrate heads up display technology, such as Google Glass, into the MetricsManager™ product line of Motion Metrics. This will bring most recent measurement results and potential safety warnings and/or alarms from mining shovels, loaders, conveyor belts, and portable sensing devices at the site directly to the attention of the users who need them most.
