World Coal,
In response to a number of Indiana utilities announcing plans to retire coal-fired power plants, America’s Power sent a letter to Governor Eric Holcomb highlighting the importance of the coal fleet.
Michelle Bloodworth, President and CEO of America’s Power, stated: “The nation’s coal fleet is essential to maintaining a reliable and resilient electricity grid. Despite these benefits, coal plants are retiring at an alarming rate, and the electricity grid is losing one of its most fuel-secure electricity sources. Governor Holcomb understands the importance of coal and the coal fleet, and we urge the governor and other leaders to carefully consider the effects of these coal retirements on the electricity grid.”
According to an America’s Power analysis, nearly 40% of the nation’s coal fleet has retired or announced plans to retire. Fuel security is important to maintaining the reliability and resilience of the electricity grid, and the coal fleet provides fuel security by maintaining an onsite supply of coal that can last an average of more than 70 days.
