EDF and China Datang to operate coal plant
EDF and China Datang Corporation (CDT) have signed an agreement whereby EDF will hold a 49% stake in Datang International Fuzhou Power Generation Company (FPC).
The joint venture is set to build and operate an ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plant with two units with an output of 1000 MW each. Construction works have just started on the Fuzhou site in Jiangxi province in South-Eastern China.
Power plant benefits
Commissioning of the Fuzhou plant is scheduled for 2016. It will be the first ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plant to be operated by EDF. This technology guarantees very high efficiency levels (43% compared to 35%) as well as a significantly lower environmental impact, when compared to a conventional coal power plant not equipped with treatment facilities:
- 800g/kWh of carbon dioxide emissions, compared to 900 g/kWh of CO2
- 100 mg/Nm3 of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, compared 720 mg/Nm3 of NOx and 1300 mg/Nm3 of SOx.
China currently produces 75% of its electricity from coal-fired power stations. This agreement offers EDF the opportunity to be deeply involved in the industrial process of constructing and operating the future power plant.
