The European power plant services market was worth €3.59 billion in 2013 and is expected to hit €4.14 billion by 2020, according to a new report from Frost & Sullivan, with refurbishments to improve the operational flexibility of fossil-fired power plants the main growth driver.

“Electricity demand from both mature and emerging European economies, as well as the decommissioning of old conventional thermal power plants, are driving the power plant services market,” said Frost & Sullivan energy and environment analysis, Pritil Gunjun. “Extensive maintenance and repairs to ageing power plants to optimise utilisation will add to the opportunities for power plant service providers.”

New projects will be a mix of advanced coal and combined-cycle gas plants, as well as conventional gas-fired plants, helping to boost demand for services from original equipment manufacturers, which are better placed to serve there more technologically complex plants.

The report covers steam turbines, gas turbines and heat recovery steam generator and boiler services. Service providers include original equipment manufacturers and independent service providers to utilities and independent power producers.
