Michigan’s largest utility, Consumers Energy, will close seven of its coal-fired power plants by April 2016, the company announced in its Accountability Report.

“These plants, which we call our ‘Classic Seven’, have provided reliable, affordable energy for Michigan residents for decades,” said David Mangebier, Senior Vice President for Governmental and Public Affairs are Consumers Energy. “But it doesn’t make economic sense to spend more to keep them running.”

The plants make up 32% of Consumers Energy’s fleet. Only one of the energy supplier is closing a larger percentage of its coal-fired plants.
