Thailand power industry presents opportunities for coal

Thailand’s plan to reduce its reliance on gas-fired power generation is likely to create opportunities for coal-fired power projects, according to BMI Research.
“We see electricity generation growing an average of 3.9% per annum between 2015 and 2024,” said the research company. “Growth will be primarily driven by non-hydropower renewables energy generation and coal-fired generation.”
In March 2015, a consortium comprising Alstom and Marubeni signed a contract worth just over US$1 billion with Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand to build a 600 MW coal-fired power unit at the Mae Moh power plant.
