Toshiba wins order from Malaysian coal-fired power plant

World Coal,

The 2000 MW Jimah coal-fired power generation project in Malaysia will be supplied with steam turbines and generators by Toshiba, in a consortium with IHI Corp., Hyundai Engineering and Hyundai Engineering & Construction.

Under the EPC Contract, Toshiba will supply and install two units of 1,000MW ultra-super-critical steam turbine and generators (STG) offering high level energy efficiency and the world's largest class of output, plus other main equipment, including plant control equipment, main transformers and the switch yard. Toshiba will also play a role in the marine civil work.

Through an international competitive bidding process organised by the Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission of Malaysia), Mitsui and 1MDB were awarded the Project and the right to construct, own and operate the 2000 MW (1000 MW x 2 units) ultra-super-critical coal-fired power plant, and to sell the electricity to Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's national power utility under a Power Purchase Agreement. The first unit of the Project is expected to start commercial operation in 2018, and second in 2019.

Toshiba has a record of building large scale power plants in Malaysia. The company's record to date includes joint construction with IHI of two large scale coal-fired power plants; the Jimah coal-fired power plant (700 MW x 2 units) adjoining the power plant to be constructed under the newly announced contract; and Tanjung Bin coal-fired power plant (700 MW x 3 units). Toshiba has also completed Port Dickson Phase 2, combined-cycle power generation project (750 MW x 1 unit), as the EPC contractor.

Going forward, Toshiba said it a statement that the group will look to reinforce its market presence by providing environmentally-conscious power plants with high power generation efficiency, which will be achieved with its thermal power technologies, including ultra-super-critical STGs and combined cycle power generation.
