Coal ash to be excavated to onsite landfill

World Coal,

Duke Energy will complete its comprehensive strategy for coal ash for two South Carolina coal facilities by excavating and relocating the coal ash from the Duke Energy Progress Robinson Plant in Hartsville, South Carolina, to an onsite, lined landfill. This is developed from the company's recently announced onsite landfills at its Dan River and Sutton plants in North Carolina.

About 4.2 million t of ash is located at the site, with 3.9 million t in an ash basin and 331 000 t located in a fill area. All ash will be excavated to the onsite landfill.

"We've used sound science to test various closure options to develop a custom strategy for the Robinson site," said John Elnitsky, Senior Vice President of Ash Basin Strategy. "We'll apply that kind of site-specific approach to our other ash basins to ensure we recommend safe, smart solutions."

"We are ready to move coal ash at some North Carolina sites as soon as regulators sign off on permits," said Elnitsky. "All we need is a green light."
