Coal companies win at Australian mining awards

World Coal,

Peabody Energy’s Millennium coal mine in Queensland was the big winner at this year’s Australian Mining Prospect Awards, bagging both Coal Mine of the Year and overall Mine of the Year titles.

Located about 60 km of Mackay in the Bowen Basin, the Millennium mine produced a record 3.4 million t of coal in 2013 at a total cost reduction of 20%, while reaching 1 million man-hours without a lost-time injury – achievements that led to its nomination for the awards.

The Explorer of the Year category saw another win for the coal industry with Resolve Coal honoured for its work on the Hyde Park Project in the Galilee Basin, Queensland.

“The criteria for the award was focused on significant new discoveries and innovation in using new data and technology,” explained Gordon Saul, managing director of Resolve Coal. “I am incredibly proud of the efforts our staff and consultants have made in first identifying, exploring and developing this project, and feel that this highly esteemed award is a fitting reward for their efforts.”

Resolve Coal has currently identified 364 million t of JORC indicated and 1.3 billion t of JORC Inferred thermal coal resources since drilling started in July 2013 with ongoing drilling efforts further defining the resource.
