Mining industry in the Global 100

A number of companies involved in the global mining industry have been named in this year’s Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World.
At 17th, Dassault Systèmes, owner of mine software solutions provider, GEOVIA, led the mining industry’s involvement in the list with Atlas Copco second at 23rd – a significant improvement on last year’s 46th place for the Swedish mining equipment manufacturer and the ninth year that it appeared in the Global 100.
“We strive to deliver products and services that are energy efficient, safe and ergonomic with minimal impact on the environment,” said Mala Chakraborti, Atlas Copco Vice President Corporate Responsibility. “We continue to increase our focus on sustainability to enhance customer productivity and create value for our shareholders.”
Canada’s Teck was the best (and only) placed mining company at 29th, while South Korean steelmaker POSCO placed at 36th.
“This ranking is the direct result of the hard work of employees across Teck, who are committed to doing the right thing for the environment, for communities and for future generations,” said Don Lindsay, President and CEO. “At Teck, we know that mining and mineral products can make a significant contribution to improving the quality of life for people around the world. Our focus is on ensuring that we develop resources in a way that is environmentally and socially responsible, and creates real benefits for society.”
Two giant industrial conglomerates that supply equipment and services to the mining industry also made the list with Siemens at 55th beating its US rival, GE, which placed 74th.
The Global 100 list is compiled by Corporate Knights magazine and released each year at the World Economic Forum. The top 100 companies are selected from all publicly traded companies with a market capitalization over USD$2 billion. Companies were evaluated based on a range of sector-specific sustainability metrics, such as water, energy and carbon productivity, and safety performance.
