Russia’s largest coal mine opens

The Republic of Khakassia in Siberia may be little known to the outside world, but it is now the home of Russia’s largest coal mine, reports The Siberian Times. At full capacity, the Arshanovsky mine will produce 10 million tpy with reserves to last 167 years.
“This is ambitious but it will have a direct impact on the opening of new industries, the creation of new jobs and increasing welfare,” said Viktor Zimin, the head of Khakassia.
The mine is expected to produce 2 million t this year, rising to 5 million t in 2017 with no date given for ramp up to its full potential capacity.
