Miner dies at Highland mine in Kentucky

Patriot Coal has reported a fatality at its Highland mine in Kentucky, US. The miner, who was named by the company as 34-year-old Eli Eldridge, was hit by a coal hauler while working underground.
The death follows two fatalities at Patriot’s Brody mine in May.
According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration there have been 15 fatalities at US coal mines this year compared to 20 in 2013.
Patriot Coal said it was fully cooperating with state and federal regulatory agencies as they investigate this incident.
Earlier this month the company warned workers at the Highland mine and nearby Dodge Hill mine of potential layoffs. The mines employ about 670 workers and produce 3.9 million t in 2013.
