Mechel starts mining new longwall at Kuzbass coal mine

Russian mining and metals company, Mechel, has launched a new longwall face at its Olzherasskaya-Novaya coal mine, part of its Southern Kuzbass OAO coal mining subsidiary.

The new longwall face has coal reserves of 3.4 million t and will be worked on for two years, according to the company. Miners will use a “special sub-level caving method”, which will enable thick seam mining in one coal layer of up to 10 m.

The methed will allow the mine to extract “maximum volumes of coal in one go while decreading the risk of […] fire,” explained the company.

“The launch of the new long wall face will significantly boost Olzherasskaya-Novaya mine’s capacity and increase our [metallurgical] coal output,” said Mechel Mining Management Co’s CEO, Pavel Shtark. “In 2016 we expect the mine to produce approximately 2 million tonnes of raw coal.”
