Mongolian firm mines 100 million t of coal

One of the biggest Mongolian mining companies, Baganuur JSC, has exploited its 100 millionth tonne of coal, coinciding with the 37th anniversary of the mine’s opening.

The Baganuur mine was founded in 1978 to provide thermal power plants with coal. A company spokesperson said that exploiting 100 million t of resources is a historical success among Mongolian mining companies, especially in coal mining.

Baganuur JSC is registered on the Mongolian Stock Exchange, and 75% of the company is owned by Erdenes Mongol LLC, while 25% is owned by Mongolian citizens.

The Baganuur coal mine is located 130 km from Ulaanbaatar, and has resources of 708.2 million t of coal.

Baganuur is a strategic deposit with the capacity for producing 4 million tpy of coal. The mine currently produces 3 – 3.2 million tpy of coal, making up 40% of the nation’s coal consumption.
