CIMIC Group subsidiary, Thiess, has been awarded a contract to operate Glencore’s Mt Owen coal mine in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. The contract will generate AUS$760 million in revenue for Thiess and builds on the contract miner’s longstanding relationship with the mine.

“The contract enables Thiess to further build on two decades of continuous association with the Mt Owen operations and the mine owner, Glencore,” said CIMIC Executive Chairman and ECOP, Marcelino Fernàndes Verdes.

In 1995, Thiess was contracted to build the Mt Owen mine infrastructure, including the design and construction of the coal handling preparation plant, site office and workshop, fuel facilities, water supply roads and wash bays.

Following construction, the company assumed responsibility for mining operations, which continues to this day.

“Our ongoing work at this geologically complex mine is testament to the relationship with Thiess and Glencore and the expertise within our organisation,” said Thiess’ Managing Director, Michael Wright. “Thiess’ focus on providing innovative technical solutions and operational efficiencies, including the through-seam blasting approach we developed, is key to the ongoing value that we offer at Mt Owen.”

The Mt Owen deposit is known for its complexity, consisting of seams of coal dipping at angles of up to 45° and mined at thicknesses between 0.4 and 4 m. Thiess is currently mining at a depth of 270 m with production of 7.6 million tpy ROM coal.

Thiess is one of the world’s largest contract mining companies with projects in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Mongolia, Botswana and Chile. It is part of CIMIC Group, which in turn is owned by Spanish construction company, ACS.

Earlier this year, CIMIC Group changed its name from Leighton Holdings as part of attempts to distance the company from a bribery scandal that has engulfed former Leighton executives over the company’s dealings between 2009 and 2011 – before the ACS takeover.
