World Coal,

Glencore produced 111.4 million t in Q3, 7% higher than the same period last year, the company said in its quarterly production report. Higher output at its Australian thermal coal operations drove the increase.

Australian thermal and semi-soft production was 49.1 million t – 11% higher than 2013 following the start-up of longwall operations at Ulan West, productivity improvements at the Bulga complex and expansion projects at Ravensworth North and Rolleston.

Thermal coal production was also up at the company’s South African operations – up 5% to 34.4 million t – and in Colombia, where production at both the Prodeco operations and at Cerrejon was up 6% to 15.1 million t and 8.2 million t respectively.

In contrast, Australian metallurgical coal production dropped 18% to 4.6 million t on the back of cost reduction initiatives at Newlands, Oaky Creek and Collinsville and mining through a fault at Oaky North.
