The start of construction for the equivalent forest railway path with termination stop "tower at the heavy mountain" has commenced.

"Today's first practical step in the implementation of the agreement of 2011 allows the pain of Waldeisenbahn friends over the loss of the historic route dwindle. The realisation of Streckenumverlegung reflects the acceptance of the forest railway in the region and opens up new excellent prospects, "said Friedemann Tischer, chairman of the association Muskau Forest Railway eV. "We thank all parties who were interested in this, unique project in Germany, involved."

Initial discussions about the route began in 2009 and were followed by the signing of the agreement in 2011. The build is now moving from a vision into a reality, according to the Mining Board of Vattenfall Europe Mining AG and Vattenfall Europe Generation AG, Uwe Grosser.

The route will be 3 km along the northern edge of Vattenfall’s opencast lignite mine, Nochten. It is a replacement for the former Tonabhn route that is set ahead of the mine. The first set of trains are set to run from the start of 2017.

The construction uses the transport path of the roughing-excavator in 1571, through where the excavator was driven from the Nochten mine towards the Reichwalde opencast mine in mid-August.

It is planned that later in 2015 the earthworks will be carried out, with the gravel being deposited and the sleepers and rails being laid. RS Gleisbau GmbH and Gleisbau Bautzen were awarded the contract for this work.

On the track, there will be the breakpoint racetrack, from where travellers can get on the racetrack to Weißwasser. In addition, four railway crossings will be built on existing routes.

"First, the paths are indeed behind the border crossings at the edge of the open pit, but after completion of mining activity they perform directly in the mining landscape. Then, the crossings will also fulfill its purpose, "said Grosser. The reforestation along the railway line forms the completion of the work.
