China helps New South Wales grow coal exports by 8%

NSW coal exports increased 8% in the 2013-14 financial review, new data reveals.

The figures from Coal Services Pty Ltd, published by the NSW Minerals Council, found the growth was driven by an increase of 22% in exports to China. Overall, 167 million t of NSW coal was exported in the 12-month period, up from 155 million t. 

Demand for NSW coal in Japan rose by 1.7% in 2013-14, demand in Korea rose 8.7%, and in Taiwan, demand rose by 14%.

Japan accounts for 43% of NSW coal exports, followed by China with 23%, Korea with 16%, Taiwan with 10% and the rest of Asia accounting for 6%.

According to the Business Spectator, Chinese demand for NSW coal has had significant growth over the last six years. In 2007-08, only 1.1% of NSW coal exports were going to China.
