India to fuel coal barges with LNG

India could soon be using LNG to fuel the barges used to transport coal. According to a Ministry of Shipping press release, an area of 10 acres has been set aside at the Haldia Dock Complex at Port of Kolkata for LNG storage facilities.
“Use of LNG is expected to save around 20% on fuel,” said the ministry. Carbon dioxide, nitrogen and sulfur oxide emissions will also fall, assisting India meet its COP20 targets.
“The efforts to introduce LNG as barge fuel is part of the overall efforts to promote transport on inland waterways and coastal shipping,” the ministry continued. According to a recent support, moving coal transportation off of the railways and onto India’s waterways could result in a significant reduction in transportation costs, reducing the cost of power.
The LNG storage facilities at Haldia are expected to be developed within the next two years with further projects expected in other regions.
