Turkey’s thermal coal imports fall
Turkey’s thermal coal imports fell by 12% year on year to almost 21 million t, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). The fall is largely attributable to a drop in both Russian and US volumes.
Russian thermal coal imports dropped 12% to 8.5 million t, while US thermal coal intake fell by 74% to just below 0.5 million t.
Russia remained the largest supplier of coal to Turkey, followed by Colombia, which made up 7.1 million t of thermal coal imports in 2013 (a 1% fall from 2012), and South Africa, which supplied 3.347 million t (a 1% increase).
Turkish imports of Ukrainian coal increased by 64% to 456,311 t.
Turkey imported 1.685 million t of thermal coal in December – down 36% from 2012 and 18% lower than November levels.
Data from TUIK also showed that Turkey imported just over 5 million t of metallurgical coal in 2013 – an 11% increase on 2012.
