Anti-mining protestors cause major problems

A state Supreme Court challenge to GVK Hancock's Alpha coal project in Queensland is putting thousands of potential jobs at risk, the company has said in a statement. Stopping the development of the Galilee Basin project will also not change global demand for thermal coal, it said, but only mean that Australia would fail to benefit.
The Galilee Basin project aims to create approximately 7000 jobs during construction and 4000 direct operational jobs for the 30 and more years of operations. Through flow-on economic benefits, these projects represent the creation of over 20 000 direct and indirect jobs and over AUS$44 billion in taxes and royalties to State and Federal governments.
GVK has invested tens of millions of dollars into a fully inclusive suite of environmental assessments, which guided authorisations from state and federal governments. The assessments included: a comprehensive hydrogeological assessment, which involved detailed modelling of the underlying geology; an evaluation of groundwater and aquifer occurrences; and an assessment of local and regional groundwater resources. Work carried out at its onsite pit test in 2011, enabled GVK to certify the groundwater models and assessments. This provided clear outlooks on how the planned mining operations relate to the surrounding groundwater aquifers. GVK also plan to set out a comprehensive groundwater monitoring management plans, following environmental conditions made by the state and federal Governments.
GVK has negotiated Make Good Agreements with the properties surrounding the proposed mines, holding the company liable in the event of impacting groundwater on the properties and are willing to enter agreements with properties outside of the area of compensation. All legal cost incurred by landowners associated with any Make Good Agreements will be paid by GVK, such as required hydrological assessments.
