Adani Mining has stopped preparatory engineering work on its controversial Carmichael project in Queensland, Australia.

The project is expected to commence operation in late 2017. Adani has signed up buyers for approximately 70% of the 40 million t coal the project is projected to produce in its first phase.

Although there are challenges, the company has stated it is still committed to the project.

The project is waiting for on environmental approval to extend Abbot Point port, which is on the edge of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, to transport and ship the coal.
