Alstom awarded key contracts in Poland and India

World Coal,

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL), has awarded Alstom a contract to supply components and services for the 2x800 MW Gadarwara super thermal power plant at Gadarwara, Narsingpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. The contract is valued at approximately €100 million.

Alstom Thermal Power will cooperate with BHEL in designing the boilers and supply pressure parts of the 800 MW supercritical boilers along with pulverisers and air preheater components.

Key components will be manufactured in Wellsville and Concordia in the US, as well as in Durgapur and Shahabad, India.

Alstom expects Unit I to be commissioned in 2016 and Unit II in 2017.

The contract comes in addition to seven contracts signed between Alstom and BHEL in the years 2008 - 2012 for supercritical boilers in Barh II, Krishnapatnam, Bara, Yeramarus, Bellary, Mouda and Nabinagar in India.

Alstom’s supercritical coal-fired boilers are designed to achieve increased efficiency and reduced emissions. The supercritical boiler technology helps in achieving around 3% higher plant efficiency compared to conventional subcritical design.

Meanwhile, the Polish firm, Kulczyk Investments, recently announced it had chosen Alstom as the general contractor for construction of a power plant in the north of Poland. The expected cost may be up to zlotys 15 billion (US$4.7 billion).

Poland’s wealthiest man, Jan Kulczyk, controls the polish firm. In March, the company announced it had shortlisted seven bidders for the project. Of these, Alstom appears to have been the successful company.

There are challenges ahead for the project, which has yet to be signed. It has not yet been met with environmental approval. At the same time, there have also been warnings issued by industry experts that slumping forward power prices are making it difficult for Polish utilities to attract the financing needed to build new generation capacity.
