The Brookings Energy Security and Climate Initiative (ESCI) has launched a new project entitled “Coal in the 21st Century” to focus on the changing nature of coal markets.

“Coal exemplifies the difficulty in balancing tradeoffs among the environmental, economic and energy security objectives embedded in energy policymaking,” said John P. Banks, Tim Boersma, Charles K. Ebinger and Heather L. Greenley in the project’s initial Policy Brief, “Coal markets in motion”, which provides an overview of the global and domestic US coal markets, discussing the major trends in coal exports, consumption and pricing.

The project will pay particular attention to the four producers that together will account for 70% of global coal output by 2014 – China, India, Australia and Indonesia – while also addressing state of US coal exports, the impact of climate policy on US coal usage and prospects for clean coal technology. Further briefs will be released through the year.
