The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Justice have reached a settlement with Alliant Energy subsidiary Interstate Power and Light Co. (IPL) covering Clean Air Act violations at seven coal-fired power plants in Iowa.

Under the agreement, the IPL has agreed to invest more than US$620 million in pollution control technology to resolve the violations of the Clean Air Act, as well as requiring the company to spend US$6 million on environmental mitigation projects and pay a civil penalty of US$1.1 million.

The proposed settlement is now subject to a 30 day comment period and final court approval.
