World Coal Association awards

The World Coal Association (WCA) has announced the winners of its inaugural Leadership & Excellence Awards 2013. The awards recognise outstanding achievement and innovation in the global coal industry and its value chain, while helping to improve environmental and safety issues.

The 2013 awards were open to companies and organisations working in the coal mining, coal use or coal technologies industries, including non-WCA members and companies not producing coal.

Milton Catelin, WCA CEO, commented: “The awards were launched to recognise outstanding achievement in leadership and innovation across four categories: environmental practice, low-carbon technologies, innovative coal technologies and mining safety. For each of the awards the Judges were looking for evidence of an innovative approach, good prospects for wider application and cost effective deployment prospects.

“The quality of applications was extremely impressive with companies having worked to find innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the global coal industry. The winners have worked to enhance safety performance, reduce environmental impacts, manage water, worked alongside local communities, and looked to utilising technologies that can reduce emissions from the use of coal to near zero.”

The winners for the WCA Leadership & Excellence Awards 2013, in each of the four categories, were:

Excellence in Environmental Practice
- Anglo American Thermal Coal: eMalahleni Water Reclamation Project

Excellence in Low-Carbon Technologies
- Alstom: Driving Reductions in CO2 whilst Meeting Essential Production Capacity Needs

Leadership on Innovative Coal Technologies
- GE Power & Water, Gasification, Duke Energy Edwardsport IGCC Power Plant: System Improvements and Integration for Reliability

Leadership on Mining Safety
- Shenhua Group: Coal Mining Safety Practice

Janusz Piechocinski. Poland’s deputy prime minister, also attended the ceremony, presenting a special award to the Polish mining equipment company FAMUR. The award was presented to a company in the host country to recognise their contribution to promoting excellence in the coal industry in Poland.
