Polish government signs deal with coal miners
The Polish government signed a deal on Saturday with unions from Europe's biggest coal producer Kompania Weglowa to end protests against plans to restructure the company, but gave no details of the agreement.
The government said this month it planned to shut down four of Kompania Weglowa's 14 mines in the south of Poland, leaving some 5000 workers without jobs.
Thomson Reuters reported that protests in the southern Silesia industrial region began last week in the four mines earmarked for closure and workers from other mines followed suit on Monday.
"I'd like to thank you for a good compromise for the future of the Polish mining sector," Kopacz said at a news conference, without saying what the deal involved.
