Anglo American third quarter results

World Coal,

The diversified miner Anglo American Plc., has released Q3 results showing a 24% decrease in iron ore production, a 32% increase in copper production, and record export levels of metallurgical coal.

Overview

  • Kumba Iron Ore production decreased by 24% to 9.5 million t.
  • Export metallurgical coal production increased by 9% to a record 4.9 million t.
  • Export thermal coal production from South Africa decreased by 1% to 4.5 million t, while Cerrejón production increased by 13% to 3.2 million t.
  • Copper production increased by 32% to 207 300 t, with 22% higher production at Los Bronces and a 130% increase at Collahuasi.

Metallurgical coal

Export metallurgical coal production increased by 9% to 4.9 million t, a record quarterly performance, owing to continued longwall performance improvements at underground operations. As planned, Aquila mine, a bord and pillar operation producing 0.5 million tpa, was placed on care and maintenance at the end of July 2013. Q4 production will be impacted by planned longwall moves at Moranbah and Grasstree.

Export thermal coal production of 1.7 million t was in line and increased by 11% compared to Q2 2013 owing to improved equipment performance.

Thermal coal

Export thermal coal production in South Africa decreased by 1% to 4.5 million t. Challenging mining conditions at a number of mines offset production increases at Greenside and Kleinkopje. In line with improved railing performance, export sales volumes exceeded production by 8%.

Domestic thermal coal production for Eskom was in line, while non-Eskom domestic thermal coal production increased by 9% to 1.7 million t due to additional production at Isibonelo.

Cerrejón production increased by 13% to 3.2 million t as production was ramped up to recover volumes lost from the strike in Q1 2013.
