Germany has forced coal plant operators to reduce their CO2 emissions by 2020. According to a ministry document released on 18 May the level of reduction has now been scaled back in comparison to what was previously planned. This comes as a response to fierce opposition from within the industry.

The ministry document revealed that the German government will now require coal plant operators to reduce their emissions by 16 million t, in comparison to the previous target of at least 22 million t.
