Strong 2Q15 production results for Rio Tinto

Rio Tinto has announced its 2Q15 production results, which are strong and have increased since last year.

The company’s hard coking coal production was reported to be 13% higher than the first half of 2014 – a result of improved production rates at Kestrel, which continues to ramp up towards nameplate long-wall capacity of around six million tonnes.

Semi-soft coking coal production was recorded to be 5% higher than the first half of 2014. This is stated to be reflecting mine production sequencing at the Hunter Valley Operations.

Thermal coal production was close to the first half of 2014 with increased tonnage at Hail Creek through a processing plant by-product stream and a strong operational performance, which was offset by the impacts of wet weather in the Hunter Valley.

For the rest of 2015, Rio Tinto projects its shares of thermal coal production to be 18 to 19 million t, semi-soft coking coal production to be 3 to 3.4 million t and hard coking coal production to be 7.1 to 8.1 million t.
