Emerson awarded South Korean power contracts

World Coal,

Emerson Process Management will install its Ovation™ control system at two 1050 MW ultra-supercritical, coal-fired power generating units at the Taean thermal power plant in South Korea. This latest project brings the total number of coal-fired power plants in South Korea with Ovation technology to five.

Ovation technology has been selected for over half of the 1000 MW, ultra-supercritical units in Asia. Although ultra-supercritical technologies are more challenging to control because of the high temperatures and pressures involved, they have the capacity to boost the efficiency of coal-based electricity generation by approximately 40%, while reducing carbon and other emissions.

Boost plant capacity

The new units will provide electricity required to support the growth of South Korea’s economy, and are expected to come online in 2016. The contract, worth US$ 11 million, was awarded by Daelim Industrial Co. Ltd, one of South Korea’s largest construction firms and the main contractor for the Taean plant. The two new units will increase the plant’s capacity to 6100 MW, making it the largest power-generating facility in the country.

Daelim International lead engineer, Y. S. Park, commented: “We were impressed by Emerson’s experience automating large, ultra-supercritical units. Based on Emerson’s expertise and its ample resources in this region, we are confident the Ovation automation solution will help us meet the Taean plant’s project and operational requirements”.

Monitor plant components

At each of the two new units, the Ovation system will monitor and control all major plant components. The system’s ability to unify boiler and turbine operations was an important consideration in the selection because tight control of boilers and turbines helps ensure more reliable and efficient plant operation.

Emerson will also supply process-optimisation technologies and a high-fidelity simulator for testing and training.

“Whether measured in megawatts or units, Emerson is a leader in automating large, ultra-supercritical units like those at Taean,” said Steve Sonnenberg, president of Emerson Process Management. “We are pleased that our technology, support and services will help meet the region’s growing demand for electricity.”
