Teck reports fire at Greenhills coal mine

Teck Resources reported that a flash fire occurred in the dryer complex at the company’s Greenhills Operation, near Elkford in British Columbia.

The fire happened at 11:00AM Mountain Time on 5 April, and was quickly extinguished. Teck confirmed in a statement that all employees, visitors and contractors at the site were accounted for.

Three employees received non-life threatening injuries. Appropriate regulatory authorities have been notified and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident. There is no major impact to the operation.

Teck’s Greenhills operation is located 8 km northeast of the community of Elkford, in southeastern British Columbia. It is operated under a joint venture agreement between Teck, POSCO Canada Limited (POSCAN) and POSCAN’s parent, POSCO. Teck has an 80% interest in the joint venture.

Coal mined at Greenhills is used to produce steel. The current annual production capacities of the mine and preparation plant (on a 100% basis) are 5.2 and 5.2 million t of clean coal, respectively.
