Mine explosion kills 25 miners in West Virginia
An explosion at an underground coal mine in West Virginia has killed at least 25 miners. Four miners remain missing as rescue efforts were suspended due to poor mine conditions at Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch mine. A further two miners have been taken to hospital.
The tragedy is the deadliest US mining disaster since 1984 when 27 miners died in a fire in Utah. It also comes are Chinese rescuers were working to save 33 miners still trapped in a flooded coal mine. Over 100 miners had already been saved from the mine in Shanxi Province, with five dead.
