UK consortium to build power plant in Morocco
A consortium led by UK firm International Power plc has been awarded a contract to build a 1300 MW coal-fired power plant in Morocco.
The country’s state power utility, ONE, has issued the contract to International Power in partnership with Moroccan energy company, Nareva. It is reported that the consortium beat French electricity group, EDF, and China’s Datang International Power to win the contract.
The power plant will be built at the Atlantic coastal Safi city, 370 km south of Rabat. The plant is expected to go on stream by the end of 2012, producing 10 billion kWh/year (27% of Morocco’s electricity consumption) once it has reached full capacity in 2014.
No financial details of the transaction have been released.
