PiS to take tougher stance on coal

According to a member of the major opposition in Poland, if the party win the general election in the autumn, Poland will take an even tougher stance in talks to persuade the European Union it needs to keep coal at the centre of its economy.

The unexpected victory of PiS candidate Andrzej Duda in presidential elections in May has allowed the party to win autumn parliamentary elections.

Poland’s economy depends heavily on coal, and has therefore opposed EU initiatives to control carbon emissions. The opposition party PiS says the country must be more decisive in its fight.

PiS also wants to accelerate Poland's steps towards diversifying its gas supplies so that it can negotiate better in 2018 with Russia's Gazprom on the price of future imports.
