World Coal,
Rio Tinto is to cut jobs at its Hail Creek coal mine in Queensland, according to Australian media reports. It is the latest round of job cuts to hit the sector, which has seen about 8000 mining jobs go in the past two years as coal prices remain low and mining companies seek to cut costs.
“Some roles at Hail Creek mine are no longer required as part of changes to ensure the mine is sustainable in challenging conditions,” a Rio Tinto Coal Australia spokesperson said.
The mining giant has not yet revealed the extent of the job losses at the metallurgical coal mine. About 950 employees currently work there, producing about 8 million t of hard coking coal.
