VIDEO: A year in the construction life of a CBM water treatment plant
Construction firm Laing O’Rourke has released a stop-motion video, which shows developments at the Northern Water Treatment Plant near Wandoan in Queensland, Australia.
The water treatment plant is being constructed for coalbed methane (CBM) company, QGC, and makes up an integral part of the Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) project. The QCLNG project will be the first to turn CBM into LNG.
Laing O’Rourke has constructed a series of three treatment plants as part of the upstream development of the QCLNG project.
The construction of the water plants has included bulk earthworks, detailed civil works, piping, mechanical and electrical trades.
The Northern Water Treatment Plant will treat 100 million l/day of water from nearby gas wells. When complete, the plant will be one of the largest water plants in Australia.
Over the course of the year (July 2013 to July 2014), the plant achieved a major milestone with the installation of three brine concentrator vessels. Weighing around 120 tonnes each, the stainless steel brine concentrator vessels were manufactured in New Zealand by NDA Engineering then shipped to Brisbane before being trucked to site for installation.

The site has used 600 t crawler cranes, and giant pieces of construction equipment that dominate the skyline and dwarf the construction workers who continue to work tirelessly to ensure the water treatment plant is built to schedule.
