Chinese CBM production increases
Data obtained from the Chinese government shows that production of coalbed methane (CBM) has increased over the first three quarters of 2014.
New data has shown that extraction of CBM, extracted from Chinese coal seams, rose 9% over the first nine months of the year to 12.6 billion m3.
Over the same period, China has put 5.5 billion m3 of CBM into use, accounting for 42.65% of the total output, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA).
Gas production from drilling stood at 2.7 billion m3, while the remaining 9.9 billion m3 were extracted from coal mines.
The NEA said the rapid increases in CBM output and utilisation has reduced the number of coal mine gas explosion accidents in China – improving safety conditions in some of the world’s most notoriously dangerous mines.
China’s CBM reserves are estimated at 36.8 trillion m3, ranking as the third largest in the world after the US and Russia.
