At the Asian Power Awards 2016 ceremony, GE received the EPC of the Year – Gold Award for its pivotal role as the main contractor and leader of the consortium for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPC) of Malakoff Corporation’s (Malakoff) Tanjung Bin Energy Power Plant.

The Tanjung Bin Energy power plant, located in the southern part of the Malaysian Peninsula near the city of Johor Bahr, also won the Coal Project of the Year – Gold Award.

The ceremony was held as part of the POWER-GEN Asia conference, taking place in Korea.

“GE’s high-efficiency ultra-supercritical steam technology used in Tanjung Bin 4 will allow Malakoff to offer affordable electricity with a low environmental footprint and provide enough energy to power 2 million people,” said Andreas Lusch, CEO, GE’s Steam Power Systems. “We are honoured to receive the EPC of the Year – Gold Award from Asian Power for our excellent and state-of-the-art project execution capabilities for this important project."

In March, GE announced that as part of a contract worth over €1 billion, Malakoff’s 1000 MW Tanjung Bin Energy power plant entered commercial operation on schedule. GE’s Steam Power Systems, together with its consortium partners Mudajaya and Shin Eversendai, executed the EPC agreement for the plant, and the ultra-supercritical, coal-fired power plant, which commenced construction in March 2012 and was completed on schedule in four years.

GE was the leader of the consortium, engineered and supplied key equipment. The company was responsible for the overall integration, project management and commissioning of the plant. The plant operates on GE’s most modern steam turbine and generator technology, its ultra-supercritical boiler and GE’s proprietary environmental control systems.
