TEP to end coal burn at Tucson power plant

US utility, Tucson Electric Power (TEP), is to stop the use of coal at its H. Wilson Sundt Generating Station, according to a company statement, switching to natural gas. “Eliminating the local use of coal is an important part of our plant to build a cleaner, more diverse energy portfolio,” said David Hutchens, President and CEO of TEP.
The power plant is subject to new federal requirements that require reductions in coal-fired power production. TEP is ending its use of coal at the plant more than two years ahead of the 31 December 2017 deadline.
“With the current low cost of natural gas, ending our use of coal at the Sundt generating station is a cost-effective way to improve out environmental performance, while preserving the reliability of our local electric service,” said Hutchens.
TEP’s Integrated Resource Plan calls for cutting the company’s coal-fired generation by more than 30% and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25% over five years.
