Winners of clean coal awards announced

Two US coal-fired power plants have won the inaugural Advanced Energy for Life Clean Coal Awards, which were presented at this year’s Power-Gen International Awards Banquet. The awards recognise the best environmental performance by US power plants based on 2013 emissions data.
The awards were won by Dynegy Inc’s Coffeen power plant in Illinois, which had the lowest emissions of sulfur dioxide among US coal-fired power plants – 99% lower than the US average, and Southwestern Electric Power Co.’s John W. Turk Jr power plant in Arkansas, which was the most efficient plant in the US. The plant achieved a heat rate 16% higher than average last year.
“America has a ong track record of using more coal, more cleanly to deliver a reliable supply of low-cost energy for families and businesses,” Gregory Boyce, chairman and COE of Peabody Energy, which founded the awards. “We applaud this years honourees for their leadership in advancing technologies to achieve our environmental goals.”
The Advanced Energy for Life Clean Coal Awards will be expanded to include the global coal-fired power fleet from 2015.
