Vostochnaya Mining Co. has put into operation modern treatment facilities at the Solntsevsky coal mine. The capacity of the new complex is 2.2 million m3/y, which is 2.5 times more than the previous level of capacity. The opening ceremony was attended by the Governor of the Sakhalin Region Valeriy Limarenko, the deputy of the Sakhalin Regional Duma A. Bolotnikov, the Mayor of the Uglegorsk urban district S. Doroshchuk and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the All-Russian Mining Company Oleg Misevra, who started the work of new sewage treatment plants.

“We see a great example of how you can combine the development of production with respect for the environment. The commissioning of new treatment facilities is a great event for the Uglegorsk region. Since the improvement of the ecological situation directly affects the quality of life and health of people,” said Limarenko.

“One of our tasks is to ensure a balance between the development of production and the preservation of the environment. And today's event confirms this. The new treatment facilities will significantly improve the quality of water bodies in the Uglegorsk region and the environment in general. The coal industry can and should be ‘green’,” commented Misevra.

A new complex of treatment facilities with a total area of 1120 m2 consists of two hangars in which new modern equipment is installed. The installation is equipped with sedimentation tanks with thin-layer modules, where the complete separation of sedimentation takes place. After that, the purified water enters an intermediate tank, then to fine filters, where sand and granodiarite, which have absorbing properties, are used as a filtering material. After disinfection with ultraviolet light, the water is discharged into a water body.

The design of new treatment facilities was carried out on the basis of an analysis of the composition of quarry waters and the results of operating experience of existing treatment facilities. The technical characteristics of the new water treatment equipment make it possible to purify quarry waters strictly in accordance with the MPC (maximum permissible concentration) of substances.
