The Solntsevsky coal mine has completed the first stage of work to eliminate the consequences of the deformation of the temporary storage warehouse in the Uglegorsk district of the Sakhalin region. The enterprise built a 500 m long drainage canal on its own to restore the course of the Yellow River and lower the collected water above the rock mass.

Furthermore, the enterprise plans to deepen the bottom of the canal and expand its carrying capacity in order to exclude its accumulation under any circumstances, including during floods and heavy rainfall. At the same time, the specialists of the Solntsevsky coal mine and the administration of the Uglegorsk urban district are constantly monitoring the level of the accumulated water. There is no threat to the population and life facilities of the district.

Solntsevsky coal mine conducts daily monitoring with water sampling of the Uglegorka River and its tributary – the Yellow River with the involvement of the independent analytical laboratory ‘EKO-SORS’. According to their data, no excess of the maximum permissible concentration of possible pollutants has been revealed since the beginning of the restoration work until 22 July 2021. Monitoring with water sampling in the Uglegorka and Zheltaya rivers will continue.

The work has been carried out since 12 July 2021 around the clock in accordance with the action plan developed jointly with the Emergency Situations Commission of the Uglegorsk urban district.

The company follows the principles of openness and transparency when carrying out restoration work. The Governor and members of the government of the Sakhalin Region, deputies of the Sakhalin Regional Duma, as well as journalists from regional media got acquainted with the course of the elimination of the consequences of the deformation of the temporary storage warehouse. The section provides full assistance to supervisory services, regional and municipal authorities in conducting investigations and inspections.
