The Chief Executive of the World Coal Association, Benjamin Sporton, has responded to BP’s Energy Outlook 2018, which was published on Tuesday, and forecasts that the world’s energy portfolio in 2040 will be comprised of oil, gas, coal and non-fossils fuels in roughly equal measure.
Sporton said: “Clearly, the world’s energy system is changing and there is an international movement to reduce carbon emissions. BP’s Energy Outlook supports a number of other independent forecasts that suggest despite the well-documented growth of renewables, fossil fuels, including coal, will remain dominant sources of energy in the global energy mix through to 2040. In line with the goals of the Paris Agreement there is a global imperative to drive commercialisation of carbon capture, utilisation and storage technologies. That is why the World Coal Association has long called for the fossil fuel industry to work together with governments to drive deployment. After all, we share similar objectives – to reduce the emissions profile of fossil fuels while ensuring global energy security.”
