Compensation to be given to families of Bhilai victims

India’s Union Minister of Steel, Shri Chaudhary Birender Singh, has announced ex-gratia payment of Rs. 30 lakh (approximately US$40 725) to the families of each of the 12 workers killed in an explosion at the Bhilai steel plant in the state of Chhattisgarh on 9 October.

In addition, Rs. 15 lakh (US$20 362) will be given to each seriously injured employee, and Rs. 2 lakh (US$2715) to employees with minor injuries.

The explosion happened during a planned maintenance job on a gasline.

The Minister, accompanied by Chief Minister, Dr Raman Singh, and Minister of State for Steel, Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, visited the plant’s JLN Hospital & Research Centre on October 10 and directed those engaged in treatment that all efforts must be made to provide the best possible treatment to those injured.

The Steel Authority of India (SAIL), which manages the plant, has announced an internal enquiry, while another enquiry is to be held by the Ministry of Steel.

In response to queries from the media, the Minister said that new techniques of de-blanking would be introduced to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future.
