Japanese coal imports hit record volume in 2013

Japan imported record volumes of thermal coal and LNG in the fiscal year ended 31 March 2014, as the country was forced to rely on coal and gas following the Fukushima disaster in 2011.

Thermal coal

Japan’s imports of thermal coal used in power generation in the past fiscal year were 111.52 million t, an annual increase of 5% and exceeding the previous record of 106.22 million a year earlier.

LNG and oil

The country imported 87.73 million t of LNG in the year to March 2014, up 1% from the previous high a year ago. Crude oil imports rose 1.5% to a three-year high of 3.69 million bpd in 2013/14.

Fossil fuels

The value of Japan’s total fossil fuel imports increased 15.2% from a year ago to a record 28.41 trillion yen in the year ended in March, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance.
